A standard account can be recovered. Total Privacy cannot.
On a standard ForeverVault account, ForeverVault holds a recovery key so some features can work if you are not there to type the password. Total Privacy removes the live recovery key. After that, a forgotten password cannot restore the vault, and ForeverVault cannot recover it.
What the recovery key is used for
Password reset and delivery
On a standard account the recovery key supports password reset, legacy delivery, share delivery, Trusted Contact release, and the emergency message. It can also be used for valid legal process under Terms 3.3 and 3.5.
The password itself
ForeverVault receives the password through an encrypted connection to verify it and stores a hash, not the plaintext password.
Not the Wallet PIN
The recovery key does not reset the Wallet PIN. Wallet uses its own 6-digit PIN. Forgetting that PIN is not fixed by a password reset or by the recovery key.
What Total Privacy changes
The live key is removed
Total Privacy removes the live recovery key. ForeverVault then cannot use that live key to reset a forgotten password or to restore the vault.
Features that needed the key
Total Privacy removes ForeverVault’s live recovery key, so ForeverVault cannot reset or recover the password. Legacy delivery, Trusted Contact release, and the emergency message that depend on that recovery key are unavailable. Sharing with another ForeverVault account can still work, because designated content is encrypted for that recipient and ForeverVault does not hold a key that opens that copy. The recipient needs a ForeverVault account. If a share cannot be encrypted for its recipient, Total Privacy is not turned on while that share remains.
An older backup may still exist for a time
Older backups may retain prior key material for a limited period, as explained in the Política de privacidad
What neither setting means
A held key is still a held key
On a standard account the recovery key is held so the listed features can run. User Content remains encrypted while stored. Encryption of a stored file is not the same thing as ForeverVault never holding a recovery key.
Total Privacy is the choice
Total Privacy is the name of the choice that removes the live recovery key. If you need the vault to be restorable after a forgotten password, stay on a standard account and keep that key in place.
Not a substitute for a password you remember
Write down how you will remember the password if you choose Total Privacy, in a place outside the vault. ForeverVault cannot recover the vault for you after the live key is gone.
ForeverVault stores and organizes information. It does not provide legal, tax, or financial advice, and it does not create wills or other legal documents.
